A design fit for a king: creating our Coronation theme
Whether you’re hosting a street party or just planning to make the most of the bank holiday weekend, our exclusive treats marking the Coronation of Charles III will add extra Bettys deliciousness to your celebrations. But it’s not only our craft bakers and cake decorators who have been busy in preparation: to add to the sense of occasion, the range comes with its own specially created packaging. We caught up with Bettys designer Alex Meek for a closer look.
You created a bespoke design which will be used on items such as the Coronation Gift Box. What was the inspiration behind the colour palette used?
Originally we starting thinking about using red and blue, but then we decided that the more muted colours of gold, green and cream with an accent of burgundy would work better together and have more of a classic Bettys feel.
Can you tell us about the specific illustrations used in the range and what they all mean?
We have used illustrations of shamrocks, thistles, a daffodil and a rose, each representing one of the four nations of the UK. Plus King Charles is known for his love of nature, so we thought it would be especially apt. Did you incorporate any traditional symbols into the range as well? We incorporated the fleur-de-lis motif into the crown, echoing the royal icing crown decorations on our Coronation Cakes.
How did you ensure the designs were authentic and respectful to the royal heritage?
We had to check that we weren’t breaking any trading standards rules and regulations: traditional royal motifs such as lions, unicorns and crests aren’t allowed, so we had to be a little more creative with the design.
Are there any elements in the designs that are a particular favourite of yours?
I like how it came together using the flora of the four nations. When the official Coronation emblem came out, it turned out that the designers had chosen a similar route, which I thought vindicated our design in a nice way.
