The perfect cup of Royal Tea

You could say that every cup of tea bearing the Bettys name is worthy of the title Royal Tea. After all, it all comes from a distinguished family. Our teas are provided by Bettys’ sister company Taylors, whose experts have long travelled the world in search of the finest quality leaves to make up our exclusive blends.

Nevertheless, in honour of Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee, we’ve given a royal makeover to our own Queen of Teas, the esteemed Tea Room Blend that faithfully serves customers in Bettys cafés every day. For a limited period you can buy the tea in a special Jubilee caddy with a handsome commemorative design to match the blend’s rich, full-bodied and refreshing flavour.

Loose leaf tea may take a little more effort to prepare than teabags, but it’s worth it for a cup to savour. Follow our step-by-step guide to brew a truly majestic pot:

1.Put fresh water on to boil. Reboiling a previous kettle, particularly in hard water areas, may change the balance of mineral salts in the water, affecting our tea blenders’ skilful fine-tuning of flavours.

2. Warm your teapot with a little hot water, throw it away then add one teaspoon of leaf tea per person and one ‘for the pot’. (The teapot won’t mind if you drink its share later.)

3.Pour on water that's just off the boil: unlike delicate green teas, black tea needs the hottest water to draw out its rich character.

4. Leave to infuse for four or five minutes. Exactly enough time to find your favourite cups, saucers and biscuits.

5.Pour through a tea strainer and serve: with milk or lemon, a little honey or just as it is.

No matter how royal, the crowning glory of any cup of tea is a Bettys biscuit by its side. To help you choose, we have a match for each one of your regal moods:
