Robyn’s nest: Christmas secrets from our Head of Beautiful

Our Visual Merchandising Manager, Robyn Cox, who we like to call our Head of Beautiful, is always busiest at Christmas. From creating our incredible shop windows, to decorating the Bettys Café Tea Rooms, his skills as a Christmas stylist are legendary. Recently he collaborated with Peter Thompson of York to bring a festive feel to their new showroom.

Previously Robyn has shared his tips for creating a Bettys beautiful Christmas in your home, so this year we were curious to discover a little about how he decks his own halls…

What are your Christmas must-haves when decorating?

I love to put on some Christmas music and make a good cup of tea or, if I’m feeling more indulgent, a hot chocolate.

Do you choose a Christmas theme each year?

I’d like to say yes, but Christmas is a really busy time and sometimes I’ve ended up decorating my own tree on Christmas Eve. Having a beautifully decorated tree and wreath are wonderful, but whatever decorations you have will look lovely. It’s great to collect decorations and sometimes sticking to a colour scheme can be restrictive, whereas an eclectic mix of decorations and the memories they each bring is something magical.

How do you incorporate colour?

Gosh there are so many ways to do this: it could be as simple as adding a bow to the wreath or Christmas tree, or within the decorations.

Real tree or fake tree?

For me it’s always got to be a real tree. I love the smell they have. Plus the joy of finding the ‘perfect for you’ Christmas tree each year is an occasion now in itself.

Is less more or is more better?

Good question! Sometimes the minimal look can be striking, even just with lights on a tree or a plain green wreath, where the interest comes from the different types of green foliage sourced. I remember one year when I found vintage Christmas decorations in a shop and I kept buying more and more. I thought the tree looked wonderful but it was a bit too colourful for some.

A Merry Christmas and a beautiful new year to you from all at Bettys.
