OUR STORY

Rise and Shine with Bettys Bread

Bringing home a quality loaf brings with it the promise of great meals, and there are few simple pleasures more satisfying than claiming the first slice of a crusty loaf layered with good salt and butter.

At our Craft Bakery in Harrogate, our bakers produce a range of loaves every day, some ideal for soft, pillowy sandwiches, others designed to make the very best toast. Each bread demands a different blend of quality flours, a mix of white, wholemeal and malted wheat and rye flours chosen to produce a specific texture and flavour for each loaf.

Founded by the son of a miller, exceptional quality flour is the lifeblood of our Craft Bakery, and breadmaking is at its heart. Our slow, artisanal techniques mean that there’s always something mixing, proving or baking to crusty perfection, all thanks to teams of Bettys bakers producing deliciously fresh bread every morning in our Café Tea Rooms.

Meet the baker

Gemma Pickup

Gemma works throughout the night at our Craft Bakery, where in the small hours our delicious breads are made. She has worked at Bettys for 22 years.

‘Baking requires passion, a desire to learn, and if like me, you work at night, self-motivation! Bread is a live product and needs rigorous work, so it helps to be physically fit.

My favourite is our new improved sourdough. I was involved in developing this and created the signature B on top. I also love our currant teacakes as they remind me of my late Nanna, we used to eat these together whilst watching Countdown.’

Bettys Loaves

Our recipes combine natural ingredients with artisan techniques and over 100- years of breadmaking knowhow. Every loaf shares a commitment to slow, traditional techniques, patiently allowing gluten and yeast to do their thing to create fantastic, proper bread.

1 / 8

Signature Sourdough loaf

Crusty sourdough made with a traditional ‘live’ fermented starter, which gives the loaf its fantastic depth of flavour and pleasing, very subtle tang. A combination of white and wholemeal flours, an unbeatable loaf for hearty toast.

2 / 8

Sun-Dried Tomato Bread

A fragrant blend of sun-dried tomatoes and oregano give this a deliciously Mediterranean flavour.

3 / 8

Yorkshire Beer Bread

A hearty loaf made with Marmalade Porter Beer from North Yorkshire and honey, perfect for deep filled sandwiches.

4 / 8

Yorkshire Millers Loaf

A soft, malty loaf with a deliciously toothsome crust, also available as an individual roll. Match with ham and Gruyère for a mouth-watering treat.

5 / 8

Yorkshire Cobble Loaf

A close-textured loaf with a rich crust, enriched with extra virgin olive oil. Made from wheat and rye flour, with a distinctive pattern cut to resemble the cobbles of Yorkshire streets.

6 / 8

Swiss Fitness Loaf

A wholesome loaf packed with sunflower, poppy and linseeds, made with a little honey to compliment the wholemeal flour and nutty flavour of the seeds. Moist and dense in the most satisfying way, it is perfect for toasting for brunches and lunches.

7 / 8

White, wholemeal and malted grain tin loaves

Our classic tin loaves are the mainstay of our sandwich menu, with a soft, hearty texture and fantastic flavour thanks to a long, slow proving process and a combination of wheat and rye flours. Our bakers use a little steam in the oven to ensure a fine, tender texture and glossy crust.

8 / 8

Fruit Loaf

A rich, subtly sweet bread made with citrus peels and vine fruits soaked in tea, a classic Yorkshire loaf to be thickly buttered and enjoyed with a cup of tea.
